Chapman’s Peak Drive
The road runs along the Atlantic side of the peninsula, with the mountain on one side and the sea far below on the other. On a Cape Point loop it is usually part of the Atlantic leg between the city and the southern tip; the other leg follows False Bay through Muizenberg and Simon’s Town. It is a toll road, which is why the tours that plan to use it list the toll among their inclusions.

Why the road can be closed
Chapman’s Peak Drive is cut into steep cliffs. The Western Cape transport authorities close it when weather thresholds are exceeded — in winter it is expected to close whenever it rains — and rockfall can shut it for longer: after a rockfall on 24 April 2026 the road was closed for periods. For motorists, the province points to Ou Kaapse Weg as the alternative route across the peninsula.
For your tour that means: the drive is planned, not promised. When the road is shut, tours take another road down the peninsula. We could not confirm a current status for a specific date when we last checked this page, so treat the drive as a bonus rather than the reason to book, and check the itinerary on the product page. Reviews show how much the day can vary: on the same Gray Line tour, one group drove Chapman’s Peak and stopped in Hout Bay, while others found stops such as Muizenberg left out. On the Excitement Travel and Tours seals-and-penguins day, several reviewers describe a programme changed at short notice or stops left out, and on the Cape Archives tour one reviewer found that beaches on the itinerary were only driven past.
Seal Island off Hout Bay
From the harbour in Hout Bay, boats run out to Duiker Island, a small rocky island known as Seal Island, where Cape fur seals crowd the rocks. The boat trip is not listed as included on the Cape Point tours on this site. The seals-and-penguins tour has seals in its title, but its product page does not spell out how the seal stop is arranged, so check it there before you book.
Reviews add two details. On the seals-and-penguins day, one reviewer’s seal boat was cancelled because of poor weather. On the Cape Archives peninsula tour, one reviewer describes an optional boat tour that is arranged at the very start of the day and calls it nice. If the seals matter to you, check on the product page whether and how a boat trip is offered on your date.
The simplest way to combine Hout Bay and the seal boat is on a separate, slower day: the hop-on hop-off bus in Cape Town runs out to Hout Bay. Our sister site hoponcapetown.com covers the routes and the options with the seal boat trip.

Good to know
Wind: the south-easterly Cape Doctor blows hard in summer and can affect the road and the sea alike. Wildlife: seals, like the penguins at Boulders Beach, are wild animals — sightings are not guaranteed. Photo stops: whether your tour stops at a viewpoint on Chapman’s Peak is set by the itinerary and the conditions on the day.
